We arrive at the park and walk a bit before finding a bench in a little alcove along the main path. Dimly lit lamp posts line the path, shadows of the trees cast onto the ground and the backdrop of the city make for a stunning setting. It was a long night already, and nice to get off our feet with this beautiful view.

“This is literally my favorite place on the planet to do this. You will see a high net-worth lady with a fur jacket and a homeless performer walking next to each other,” I tell him. “It is so much fun to imagine all their stories, or sometimes to entertain myself, I make up an entire life for them in my head.”

Eric turns and glances at the two people passing. I notice him focusing on the man dressed in all gray - jogging pants and a sweatshirt, and acting nonchalant but would suddenly have a spurt of speed with these little wheels on the bottom of his shoes. There’s a blonde woman in a sports bra, yoga pants, and running shoes racing close behind him. I wonder what about them Eric found entertaining.

I wait until both are a respectful distance past before leaning into Eric.

“So, what were you imagining as they passed?” I ask curiously.

“The endorphin racer is chasing him,” he said, “and when she gets too close, his superpower is growing wheels and getting away. Or maybe he is her human pacing car. I haven’t quite figured it out yet.”

“See, now you understand,” I tell him as I glance over to a path further from us. “You see, the show girl-looking woman over there?”

“Wow, yeah, I think she might have escaped from a stage somewhere,” he whispers.

“I think her jailor is close on her heels,” I tell him as a man wearing a top hat and tuxedo comes up behind the lady. He, of course, appears to be headed to a black-tie event, but my imagination fills in the blanks with humor.

“Nope, those two are my favorite,” Eric interjects, pointing to an older couple holding hands and strolling with their tiny little dog that would randomly stop and yap at other pedestrians. “They are visiting New York for the first time for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. He promised her back in college they would someday get to the city, and today he fulfilled that oath, after all these years living on a little dairy farm in Wisconsin.”

“Oh, see, now you are getting it,” I tell Eric happily. “I love that.”

The smile on my lips is not going anywhere. I have so much more to show Eric tonight, and I have a feeling that this will be a night he will never forget. New York is unique, and seeing it for the first time through his eyes is a treat I’m excited to fully experience.
